So, anyone else out there listening to the great leader's newest plan? He wants to make a constitutional amendment defining marriage as 'a binding commitment between a man and a woman'. A constitutional fucking amendment, people! Christ, does no one but me see the insanity in this? This is a PERSONAL choice being dictated by the government. Yeah, 'cause that's EXACTLY where the control should be. *see me rolling my eyes here*. You have to love a government that will tell a woman it's okay to have an abortion because no one can tell her what she can do with 'her own body', but will step in and attempt to prevent two consenting adults doing whatever THEY want with their own lives. In the first place, what bug crawled up the religious right's ass that they think what two people do has any effect on them whatsoever? Bob and Ted get married, it affect's Steve and Nancy's marriage NOT A GODDAMNED BIT! I hear all the vitriolic yada yada over the airwaves about how this will destroy the institution of marriage, ad nauseum, ad infinitum. I have YET to see how this is true. If my neighbor beats the hell out of his wife on a regular basis, THAT'S an affront to what marriage is supposed to be, but it does NOT make my marriage any less than the happy and sacred *to us* thing that it is. Two gay people pledging love and devotion is certainly much better than a wife beater and his victim tying the knot, but I guess when one is blinded by religious fervor, one can't see that. I'm not saying there is never abuse in gay partnerships, I'm saying that MANY marriages with heterosexual couples, straight people being the ones who are primarily married, are flawed and an affront to many people who see in them the abuse, neglect, and hatred that all too often occurs. So just because what some lousy excuses for humanity practice behind closed doors do we say no STRAIGHT people should be allowed to marry? Of course not, because that would be, hhmmm, STUPID maybe? But we'll tell an entire population that they can't marry because 'it's against god's laws' or 'historically, marriage ahs been between a man and a woman'. Let's see... historically, women were defined as childbearers and black people as slaves... did we keep those definitions as time went by or tear them the fuck up when we developed some COMMON FREAKING SENSE? We scrapped them, duh, and about damned time. Well, same goes here. So WHAT if it's been historically defined as between a man and a woman? 'Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it'. Why keep perpetrating a practice that outright oppresses one part of the population at the behest of the most judgemental part of the population? You don't like gay marriage? THEN DON'T MARRY SOMEONE FROM THE SAME SEX! It's not contagious, or haven't you all figured that out yet? You don't like it, then don't do it. Now isn't that simple? And as for the whole 'god's law' thing, well, guess what? The government is not supposed to set up religious principles. That's not their job. That's the job of the church of your choice. Period. The day the government turns into my spiritual keeper is the day I move to the fucking moon. I don't need some branch of the government deciding to protect me from sinning. THAT'S NOT WHAT THEY'RE THERE FOR! I didn't vote for Bush because I needed someone to save me from myself, I voted for him because I liked the thought of Gore for President less than Bush. Boy, was I wrong. Gore wouldn't have suggested adding a damned amendment to the constitution that has no purpose but to hold a group of people up as 'less than' the rest. It's complete and utter horseshit.
Mr. Bush, if you're listening, let me tell you one thing real fast... these gay, lesbian, bisexual people are human beings, of all faiths, and you ARE NOT their pastor, their rabbi, their GOD. It's not up to you, or ANY government group, to decide who can marry who, short of age limits. These are adults, fit to make their own decisions and choices. If any CHURCH chooses not to marry gay and lesbian couples, that's fine, that's up to the church... THE CHURCH! Not the government, and not YOU, Mr. Bush. It's not in the job description of the president of the United States that he is to be the conscience, judge, and imposer of religious doctrine on the citizens of this country. The government should be UNBIASED, fair, and representing ALL it's citizens, not just those that voted for him/her. You people in the big white house tend to forget that, don't you? Yes, you're part of a party, and yes, you won the election, but guess what? There were almost as many people who voted AGAINST you as voted FOR you, by a very close margin, and what you're effectively saying is that even though half the country doesn't agree with your views, you don't give a flying rat's ass, you're going to pander to your own allegedly Christian views and the riotous screeching of all who believe like you, totally dismissing all who don't fall in your neat little box. Mr. Bush, that box is narrow, it's harsh, and it's separatist, allowing room for compassion, kindness, and fairness only for those WITHIN, and leaving those without weeping for fair play and equality. I am deeply ashamed, Mr. Bush, that I ever voted for you and that you left your heart and your kindness somewhere behind you on the path you trod to the big white house...
