aawwwwww..that just sucks. But just think of it this way...you saved him from a terrible fate for a reason. You fed him and cleaned him up just in time for some sweet little girl to come in and pick out her first kitten. He may even be dressed up in doll clothes by now thinking that the dart across traffic wouldn't have been nearly as humiliating. Just believe the best. I'm sorry your heart is aching. Wish I could make it feel better.
